Kindergarten Round-Up set for April 23-24

Attention, parents! Do you have a child who will be entering kindergarten in the Pendleton School District this fall? If so, mark your calendars for April 23 and 24 for the annual Kindergarten Round-Up.

The event will take place at the Convention Center all three days. Parents may register their incoming kindergarteners on April 23 and 24 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (a Spanish interpreter will be available from 5-7 p.m. on both of these days).

The Kindergarten Round-Up is a chance for parents to pre-register their new kindergarteners. The early registration also provides the District with some preliminary enrollment figures so staff can prepare for the right number of classrooms. The District will host the Kindergarten Round-Up at the Pendleton Convention Center this year, rather than at individual schools, to help streamline the process, as well as to help promote the District’s annual Art Show, which will also take place at the Convention Center during the Kindergarten Round-Up.

Parents who would like to register their incoming kindergarteners should bring a copy of their child’s birth certificate, social security number and immunization records with them to the Kindergarten Roundup. In addition, parents may also click here to download all of the necessary forms to fill out ahead of time to expedite their registration process during the Kindergarten Round-Up.

Students must be at least 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2013, to enroll in kindergarten.

If you’re a parent of an incoming kindergartener and cannot attend the April 23-24 Kindergarten Roundup, please contact the appropriate elementary school for an informational packet. If you’re unsure of which school your child will attend, please contact the Pendleton School District Office, 541-276-6711.

SMS seeks old, forgotten musical instruments

Do you have an old musical instrument just taking up space and collecting dust in your home? Then Sunridge Middle School wants to take it off your hands!

SMS is seeking community members’ old, dusty and forgotten musical instruments for use in the Sunridge music department. This year, there are more Sunridge students wanting to take a band class than the school has instruments available. While many students are able to afford rentals from a local music shop, others cannot.

SMS Principal Matt Yoshioka said the school has a small budget each year for renting instruments to students who can’t afford to purchase or rent their own, but that funding stream is already on track for depletion by the end of the year. While Sunridge does does own some instruments that it checks out to students, most are very old and require frequent repairs.

“The great thing about musical instruments is they really last a very long time and can be used to benefit the education of the students for many years to come,” Yoshioka said, noting the school can provide a tax write off sheet for those who donate.

Anyone who would like to donate an old musical instrument may drop it off at the Pendleton School District Office, 1207 SW Frazer Ave., or Sunridge Middle School, 700 SW Runnion Ave. If you need someone from the school to pick up the instrument, please contact Sunridge at 541-276-4650 to provide an address.
