The Pendleton School District recently learned it has been named the “Commercial Recycler of the Year” by Pendleton Sanitary Service, Inc.

PSSI President Susan McHenry, Vice President Mike McHenry presented the award to the District during a presentation Jan. 26 at the District Office.

The “Commercial Recycler of the Year” award is determined at the end of each year by a vote of PSSI employees, who see first-hand the quality, commitment and effort made by commercial recyclers, Susan McHenry said. PSD was unanimously selected for the honor this year, with McHenry saying the decision “was a clear and obvious choice for the award, based on the quality of the material they produce, as well as the improvements that have been made in their recycling program this year.”

Much of the PSD’s recycling program is student-driven, said Superintendent Jon Peterson. McHenry said this notion is “exciting, because it means that not only is our recycling education and promotion working, but it is reaching the next generation who will lead us into the future.”

PSD Assistant Superintendent Tricia Baker said the District is honored and proud to receive the award from PSSI.

“Recycling is an important part of the District’s effort to cut down on waste, and it’s an endeavor that is important to both our staff and students,” Baker said. “We’re very proud of all the recycling commitments made by our school community, and we’d like to thank Pendleton Sanitary Service for recognizing those efforts.”

Past “Commercial Recycler of the Year” businesses include St. Anthony Hospital, Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution, Keystone RV, Hill Meat and the Oregon National Guard.

“It is always a pleasure to make the presentation of the Commercial Recycler of the Year award,” McHenry said. “Everyone at Pendleton Sanitary Service works hard to make recycling successful in Pendleton, despite the volatility of markets for recycled materials and the hard work to make it happen. It is exciting and encouraging to see our customers’ commitment to recycling – it makes our own efforts even more rewarding.”
