Parents + students = fun at Sherwood Elementary
Students and parents alike found out how fun math can be during Sherwood Heights Elementary School’s Family Math Night Thursday. Nearly 100 students and parents participated in the event, part of National Parental Involvement Day (Nov. 17).
The goal of National Parental Involvement Day is to increase parental involvement at public schools across the United States, said Shelley Liscom, principal at Sherwood.
Family Math Night was sponsored by the Sherwood staff members to teach parents and students games and other math activities that families can play at home. Some of these games required just a few supplies (dice, decks of cards, and paper). Other activities included board games like Yahtzee and Math Bingo.
During the 90-minute event families spent at the school, they were able to participate in four different games or activities. Each child went home with a sack of “goodies” – math flash cards, dice, a deck of cards, and other game supplies.
